CESAR has created interactive dashboards using data from de-identified electronic health records (EHRs) obtained from hospitals participating in the Emergency Department Drug Surveillance (EDDS) system. EDDS gathers this EHR information from participating hospitals in order to monitor the trends in the drugs detected in patients presenting to their Emergency Departments (EDs). EHRs submitted to EDDS contain de-identified demographic and clinical information such as chief complaints, diagnoses, and urine drug test results. Semiannually, participating hospitals submit EHRs to CESAR. Results are updated, entered into data dashboards, and posted on this site.

CESAR received initial funding (2017-2020) through the University of Maryland’s MPowering the State Opioid Use Disorders Initiative to pilot EDDS in Maryland (Maryland EDDS Pilot). The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has provided funding to CESAR to implement EDDS with 30 hospitals across the U.S.
